Maybe it’s that resolution to read more classics. Maybe it’s the Hyatt at the Bellevue hotel we just wrote about on SniqueAway. Either way, we’re in a literary frame of mind today, and what better way to pay homage to the Bellevue and literary classics all at once than to highlight some Philly literature past, present and up-and-coming?

Edgar Allen Poe: The obvious choice, this renowned writer lived and wrote in Philly for more than 6 years, writing many of his most influential tales during that time. While an anthology wouldn’t be a bad idea for this guy, one of our favorites has to be The Fall of the House of Usher.
Lisa Scottoline: Born in Philadelphia, and having attended the University of Pennsylvania and its Law School, this modern mystery writer has graced the New York Times Bestseller list 13 times in her career and has even earned the Edgar Award for best paperback original. We recommend her most recent story Save Me.
Philly Fiction: If you aren’t a Poe fan, and would prefer something more varied than a standalone mystery, check out Philly Fiction’s collection of short stories and notable tales. Consider them your one-stop shop for modern writers from the City of Brotherly Love (more than 30 in each volume).
