Sometimes “All That Glitters” is Actually Neon

Share:

Las Vegas is famous for many things: The casinos, obviously, plus Elvis, the Rat Pack, and all-you-can-eat buffets.

But the city is also famous for its neon. Whether it’s the nostalgic, campy signage of days gone by or the multimedia light shows of modern day, Vegas has always been big on the bright and bold.

The famous Golden Nugget is a perfect example. Located adjacent to the Fremont Street experience, itself a dazzling display of light and sound, the hotel welcomes guests with glittering lights galore.

We thought it would be fun to dig up some classic neon (and otherwise) signage from across the country. Here are a few highlights worth checking out!

Learn to Cook on Your Next Getaway

Some people vacation to escape the kitchen, while others travel to learn everything they can about what they eat. If you are the latter—and pick places to stay based on breakfast, lunch and dinner—a hotel with cooking classes might just be the winning recipe for your next trip. Here are some of our favorite places to learn how to cook while away.

Ramekins Culinary School and Inn: Located in Sonoma, California—not far from the highly acclaimed French Laundry restaurant—this school/inn brings in notable chefs to teach everything from cheese making to French cuisine.

The Essex, Vermont’s Culinary Resort & Spa: Alongside a picturesque setting in northwestern Vermont, the resort offers hands-on classes that teach technique, regional cuisine and traditional recipes at its Cook Academy.

Blackberry Farm: Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains, the farm provides culinary events and cooking demonstrations taught by the top people in the food world today. Check the calendar to see what’s cooking.

The Biltmore Hotel: For those looking for a little heat outside of the kitchen, a stay in Miami is just the ticket. As the only hotel with a recreational cooking school operating in North America, the Biltmore Hotel is a fabulous place to learn how to cook up a storm.

My Summer Cottage was a Mansion, and Other Stories of the Super-Rich

Guests staying at the Mill Street Inn in tony Newport, Rhode Island will almost certainly include a visit to one of the town’s famous mansions during their stay.

But you don’t need to travel to Newport to catch a glimpse of extravagance from a bygone era. Here are four famous homes worth visiting around the country.

Vizcaya, Miami, FL – The summer home to industrialist James Deering, this elaborate mansion is set on 10 acres overlooking Miami’s Biscayne Bay.

Falling Water, Bear Run, PA – Not a mansion per se, but this elegant Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece is perhaps the best-known home in the U.S. It is the only public, major Wright-designed house with all of its original details still intact.

Hearst Castle, San Simeon, CA – This sprawling complex famously started out as a “bungalow” before ballooning into one of the most opulent and eccentric homes in the country. The Neptune Pool is adorned by an actual roman temple facade!

Pabst Mansion, Milwaukee, WI – One doesn’t necessarily equate PBR with high society, but Captain Frederick Pabst built himself quite a house–to the tune of $32.7 million in 2011 dollars.

Nothing like Ol’ Blue Eyes and the gang to chase away the end-of-summer blues (we’ve been listening to “My Way” all morning). And we just discovered that a few special crooners once called this Golden Era hotel (vacation) home.

We’ve collected a few classic tunes for your listening pleasure:

Come Fly With Me by Frank Sinatra

Ain’t That a Kick in the Head by Dean Martin

The Candy Man by Sammy Davis Jr.
