Let’s Drink to Chocolate!

Share:

After writing about Chocol Ha café in Campeche (it’s right near Casa Don Gustavo!), we had chocolate on the brain. This quaint, colonial café specializes in herb-infused chocolate drinks. But, if you can’t make it down to sunny Mexico to sample these unique libations, try whipping some up at home. Here’s a roundup of some interesting, internationally inspired cocktails with chocolate as the star ingredient.

Mexican Hot Chocolate with Tequila and Cayenne Pepper: With good melted chocolate, your favorite tequila and a dash of cayenne, this warm cocktail puts an adult spin on the classic spicy Mexican hot chocolate.

Herbal Chocolate: Using Mozart Dry (a unique chocolate spirit from Salzburg), this chocolate cocktail incorporates a fresh twist with sage leaves and peppercorns. What better way to bring a little European spin into your chocolate recipe collection.

Sweet Basil Chocolate Martini: With muddled basil, top-shelf vodka and smooth melted chocolate, this martini will definitely turn some heads at your next cocktail party. Chocolate lovers rejoice!

Dive into an Underwater Museum!

Not far from the Sandos Cancun Luxury Experience Resort, you’ll find a museum unlike any other on this earth—and that is because it sits at the bottom of the sea.

The Museo Subacuatico de Arte (MUSA) is located in the National Marine Park surrounding the Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Punta Nizuc area. During a snorkeling trip, you can view more than 400 underwater sculptures designed by eco-sculptor, Jason de Caires Taylor. These breathtaking creations are not only incredible pieces of art work, but they also encourage coral growth and act as a natural habitat for fish. There is no doubt that this is definitely one museum swimming with possibilities.

One of the things we love most about traveling is being able to pick up treasures we can’t find at home. A stay at Magic Blue Boutique Hotel in Playa del Carmen, for example, puts visitors steps from stalls touting Mexican handicrafts, colorful textiles and one-of-a-kind jewels. Well, thanks to L-atitude—a site that sells chic clothing, jewelry and home décor from countries around the world—you won’t need a passport to don international duds. Here a few of L-atitude’s made-in-Mexico pieces we’ve got our eyes on:

Skip the Stress with Our Holiday Travel Tips!

We can all agree that traveling over the holidays can be stressful. Between visiting relatives and fleeing the frost for destinations like Gran Caribe Real Resort & Spa in Cancun, it seems like everyone’s on the move. Avoid a Home Alone situation (a.k.a. a mad dash to the airport followed by the realization that you’ve left little Kevin at home) by following a few of these handy travel tips:

Prepare: Print out boarding passes ahead of time, get to the airport a half-hour to an hour earlier than you typically would and, by all means, take potential power outages that may cause your alarm clock to stop working into consideration (we’re looking at you, McCallisters).

Pack light: If you’re traveling sans-children for a week or less, skip the 5-piece luggage set and opt for a carry-on. That way, you’ll skip the dreaded wait at baggage claim and won’t risk a lost-luggage meltdown.

Play around: De-stress during a layover by reading an entertaining book like David Sedaris’ laugh-out-loud (and entirely fitting) novel Holidays on Ice. If you have an hour to spare, pop into a salon for a pedicure; Sea-Tac Airport in Seattle contains a butter London nail salon, where manicurists will find out what time your flight leaves before dolling up your digits.

A Secret River That Begs to be Shared

When one thinks of vacationing in Mexico, images of piña coladas and spring breakers often come to mind. And though it is a popular party spot (and we’re certainly not opposed to a well-mixed margarita), there’s another side to Mexico. A perfectly peaceful, naturally beautiful side.

One such spot that caught our eye is Rio Secreto in sunny Playa del Carmen. Close to popular (and swoon-worthy) resorts including Azul Fives Hotel by Karisma, Rio Secreto consists of over 7 miles of underground caverns and river systems. The ancient, pristine passageways also boast some of the most dramatic mineral formations in the world. Breathtaking beauty you’ll remember forever or a pesky hangover? We’ll take the former.
