Ah, the Vermont mountains. Serene. Bucolic. Full of … writers?

Every summer the Bread Loaf Writers Conference gathers some of the country’s best writers for an intense 10 day schedule of readings, lectures, and workshops just outside Middlebury. Named after nearby Bread Loaf mountain, the conference has attracted some pretty big names in its day.

We figured guests staying at the Middlebury Inn might want to read up on some Bread Loaf authors before visiting this literary town. Here’s a (very short) list of classic titles from former Bread Loafers (and please tell us that’s an actual term!):

Robert Frost (an early faculty member)- The Poetry of Robert Frost: The Collected Poems, Complete and Unabridged

Amy Hempel - At the Gates of the Animal Kingdom: Stories

Charles Baxter – The Feast of Love

Natasha Trethewey (current poet laureate) -Thrall: Poems

Carson McCullers – The Heart is a Lonely Hunter
