Here in the northeast it’s easy for us to get wrapped up in snowy recreation and brisk hot-chocolate strolls. But not everyone likes the cold (there’s a reason migration is a thing…). If that’s you, then here’s an idea: Book a trip to St. Helena, stay in the quaint Harvest Inn and take part in some warm-weather winter fitness.
The inn’s area features an impressive number of vineyard-side biking paths perfect for sampling that famous Napa vino (try: Merryvale Vineyard) while simultaneously burning off those not-so-famous calories. Stop by St. Helena Cyclery for the equipment rental and head out on their highly recommended “Taste the Wine” route. Sure you may be replacing skis with a cycle in the dead of December, but hey, when in Napa Valley.

An afternoon stroll: fresh air, sunshine, exercise. How can it get any better? Well, you could add wine, for one. And in Santa Maria, CA—the fitting location for the Historic Santa Maria Inn—you’ll find just that: wine, wine and more wine.
The Santa Maria Valley is home to almost a dozen different wineries and vineyards, all of which position themselves along a convenient wine trail that’s perfect for getting some afternoon exercise (or you could drive if you want to cut to the chase). We recommend the award-winning Burgundian and Rhône varieties at the Foxen Vineyard, which offers not one but two separate tasting rooms.
So get out there and explore the countryside, vino in hand. But be sure to fuel up with some famous area BBQ beforehand. You’ll need the whole day to hit all of these Central Coast spots.

We all know it’s tough to combat those back-to-cold-weather woes, even on vacation. So let’s all join hands in our love of relaxation (and hatred of colder weather), and indulge in these not-so-standard treatments from the Lorien Hotel & Spa.
This Vincente Wolf-designed spa caught our attention with five treatment spaces, on-site steam rooms and a collection of Kerstin Florian products (to take home with you!). Give these treatments a whirl:
Lavender Dreams- Everyone loves a little lavender, and in this full spa experience you’ll get a full body scrub and a warm wrap—all with a healthy dose of that soothing wild purple flower.
Rejuvenating Caviar Dream Crème Facial- Protein-enriched caviar products improve skin while an Acu-lift massage sooths texture. No need to wait for dinner to indulge in some caviar, right?
